The Miami Herald’s signature event, The Herald Hunt, gets off to its zany start
at noon on Sunday, October 21st on Miami Beach, Florida.
One of South Florida’s favorite annual events since its inception in 1984,
The Herald Hunt is a unique urban adventure in which, during one memorable
afternoon, players attempt to solve a series of bizarre clues sprinkled around
South Beach. The cost of admission? The Sunday, October 21st edition of The
Miami Herald, featuring the essential Herald Hunt section, the “roadmap” to
The Hunt.
The first three teams to finish The Herald Hunt win a trip for four to a fabulous
destination. But as most seasoned Hunters know, you don’t go for the prize, you
go for the thrill of actually solving the puzzles. The “Ah Ha” moment of coming up
with a correct solution is a rush unlike any other.
With the event taking place on South Beach, this year’s Hunt has a distinctive “Pre- Deco” feel. Players will join emcee Dave “The Sting” Barry for an afternoon
of games, thrills and plenty of laughs. “There’s really no community event quite
like The Herald Hunt,” says Elaine Pasekoff, Hunt Executrix and Miami Herald
Promotions Manager. “It brings together people who share a sense of humor, a
spirit of adventure and thought patterns that defy description.”
The geniuses behind The Hunt are, as always, Dave Barry, The Herald’s Pulitzer
prize-winning, nationally syndicated humor columnist and best-selling author, and
Tom Shroder, formerly executive editor of The Herald’s Sunday magazine, Tropic,
and now a renowned author and senior editor at The Washington Post.
Together, Barry and Shroder have created and fostered an event that has become
famous not just in Florida, but across the nation. They spend months conjuring up
devious clues that inevitably confound players, some of whom fly in from all over
the country just for the occasion.
Media interviews with Dave Barry will be available on a limited basis the week
before The Herald Hunt, October 15th through 19th.

The Herald Hunt was born in 1984 as The Tropic Hunt, after The Miami Herald's late, great Sunday magazine, Tropic.
(Back then, Tropic was home to Hunt Creators, Dave Barry and Tom Shroder. Dave's column appeared in Tropic, and Tom was Executive Editor.)
Through the years, through the bus station boogers, the deck of Cards, the spot where Fay Wray fell, there has been one fan -one devoted,
crazed, organized, wonderful guy who has chronicled it all. Andy Wenzel, the Man, the Fan we all admire. By day, a Software Support Manager; by night,
the Master of Tropichunt.com. If there is anything... anything at all you want to know about one of the
past Hunts, we advise you to click on the link, and take a look. It's all there, thanks to Andy!
Get a jump on the Hunt! Find the Early Sunday Edition by 12 noon on Saturday, October 20 at most Miami-Dade locations, and at these locations in Broward.
